In a remarkable display of technological prowess, a team of students from Purdue University's Electrical and Computer Engineering program has created a groundbreaking robot that solves a Rubik's Cube in an astonishingly short time. The robot, nicknamed "Purdubik's Cube," completed the puzzle in just 0.103 seconds, shattering the previous world record of 0.305 seconds held by Mitsubishi Electric engineers.
The incredible speed of the robot is made possible through a combination of advanced technologies, including machine vision, custom algorithms, and high-performance motion control hardware. The team, consisting of Matthew Patrohay, Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd, and Alex Berta, developed a Bluetooth-enabled Smart Cube that allows users to scramble the puzzle in real-time, with the robot instantly solving it with remarkable precision.
What makes this achievement even more impressive is the collaborative effort behind the project. The students credit Purdue University's cooperative education program for helping them develop not only the technical skills necessary to create such an advanced robot but also the friendships that made the collaboration possible. The official Guinness World Record attempt took place on April 21, 2025, confirming the robot's incredible solving speed that is faster than a human blink.
