As technology continues to advance, new challenges emerge in the world of cybersecurity. One such challenge is the potential threat posed by quantum computing to existing encryption methods. To address this, the Korean government and tech companies are taking proactive steps to develop and implement quantum-resistant cryptography.
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and its subsidiary KEPCO KDN are leading the way in this innovative project. They are participating in a pilot program to transition critical infrastructure, specifically in the energy sector, to new encryption technologies that can withstand potential quantum computer attacks. This involves testing and implementing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems, which are used for remote power consumption monitoring.
The project involves collaboration between multiple private companies and government agencies, including the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). By conducting these trials, they aim to develop a roadmap for gradually implementing quantum-resistant encryption across various national infrastructure sectors. This initiative not only protects sensitive data but also positions South Korea at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation in the quantum computing era.
