The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has recently set up four specialized hubs focused on advancing quantum computing technology in India. These hubs, known as Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs), are located at prestigious institutions across the country, including the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, Bombay, and Delhi. The initiative aims to foster collaboration among academic institutions and private industries to accelerate the development of quantum technologies.
In addition to establishing these hubs, significant progress has been made in quantum technology research. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully demonstrated a 6-qubit quantum processor, showcasing advancements in superconducting circuit technology. Furthermore, the Department of Space has achieved a milestone by demonstrating secure quantum communication over a distance of 300 meters, allowing for real-time exchanges of text, images, and video calls.
The establishment of these T-Hubs brings together a diverse group of 152 researchers from 43 different institutions, highlighting the collaborative effort to push the boundaries of quantum technology in India. This initiative under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) is expected to play a crucial role in positioning India as a leader in the field of quantum computing and communication.
