In a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, it was revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) still struggles with basic tasks, such as telling time on analog clocks and understanding calendars. Despite significant advancements in AI technology, these systems have not yet mastered the ability to interpret the positions of clock hands or accurately answer questions related to dates.
The researchers highlighted that comprehending analog clocks and calendars requires a combination of spatial awareness, context, and basic mathematics. This presents a considerable challenge for current AI systems. Overcoming this limitation could enable AI to perform time-sensitive applications, such as scheduling assistants and autonomous robots, as well as tools designed for individuals with visual impairments.
During the study, the team tested various AI models, known as multimodal large language models (MLLMs), to see how well they could answer time-related questions by analyzing images of clocks and calendars. The results showed that these AI systems were only correct in identifying clock hand positions in less than 25% of cases, with more errors occurring when faced with Roman numerals or decorative clock hands.
