In a significant move towards enhancing recycling efforts, Seongnam City has announced the installation of an artificial intelligence (AI) based resource sorting robot at its recycling facility in Yatap-dong. This initiative is part of a government program aimed at promoting innovative products from venture companies. The city has secured funding of approximately 275 million KRW for this project, which will help improve the efficiency of waste sorting.

The new robot, which measures 2.6 meters in width, 2.2 meters in length, and 3.3 meters in height, is designed to automatically sort four types of recyclable plastic waste. It utilizes advanced algorithms to distinguish between different colors and materials, enabling it to identify even the more challenging items, such as colored PET and polyethylene plastics. This technology is expected to significantly increase the volume of recyclable materials processed at the facility.

Once the robot is installed in June and undergoes a trial period until October, the city will officially take ownership of the device by the end of the year. With the addition of this robot, Seongnam City will operate a total of three AI sorting robots, which are projected to enhance the daily sorting capacity of recyclable plastics from 1.2 tons to 1.8 tons. City officials believe that this initiative will not only support local venture businesses but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
