Researchers at Dartmouth College in the United States have conducted a groundbreaking clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of an AI-powered chatbot named "Therabot" in treating mental health disorders. The study is notable for being the first of its kind, and the results have been promising. Participants suffering from depression, anxiety, and eating disorders reported significant improvements in their mental health after using the chatbot.
Therabot, which has been in development since 2019, was designed with input from psychologists and psychiatrists. It employs cognitive behavioral therapy principles and includes safety measures to prevent harm. The chatbot also features crisis intervention tools, encouraging users to reach out to emergency services when necessary.
In the study, 106 participants diagnosed with mental health disorders were provided with the Therabot app on their smartphones. The findings revealed a remarkable reduction in symptoms, with depression symptoms decreasing by 51% and anxiety symptoms by 31%. Additionally, concerns related to body image and weight dropped by 19%, and individuals with binge eating disorder experienced a notable decrease in episodes of disordered eating.
