Scientists at the University of California, San Diego have developed an innovative underwater robot that mimics the movement of marine creatures. This unique device, nicknamed SquidBot, is designed to navigate delicate underwater environments like coral reefs with minimal disruption to marine life.
The robot is constructed from soft, flexible materials and features a hollow body similar to a paper lantern. It moves by creating water jets, much like a squid propels itself through the ocean. By drawing water into its body and then forcefully expelling it, the robot can achieve speeds of up to 32 centimeters per second, allowing it to smoothly maneuver through complex underwater landscapes.
What makes this robot particularly exciting is its potential for marine research and exploration. Equipped with a waterproof camera, SquidBot can capture detailed images and videos of underwater ecosystems without causing significant disturbance. The researchers have already successfully tested the robot in aquarium environments, demonstrating its ability to swim among corals and fish with remarkable precision and grace.
